History of Interface

In 1967, Rudy R. Nessel and James C. “Jim” Downs realized companies across a diverse assortment of industries were facing many of the same challenges in federal government sales. Jim had already cut his teeth as a DC based manufacturer’s agent, selling large volumes of specialized safety equipment and supplies to the Defense Department and the GSA.

Rudy at this time was the government contracts manager for a large industrial manufacturer. His advice and counsel was frequently sought out by friends within other companies, who were pursuing government contracts.

Jim and Rudy discussed their respective areas of involvement, and it became apparent to them that as a team their skills could help businesses navigate and succeed within the government procurement process. It was from this perspective that Rudy and Jim formed Interface Incorporated.

Much has changed since we afforded our first clients a DC based presence, but the need for a comprehensive understanding of the federal marketplace remains as strong today as it was over 50 years ago due to the continuing growth and realignment of government agencies, and the constant evolution of procurement policies and practices.

Interface remains focused our original mission, which is the development of profitable government business for each of our clients, some of which have been with the company since our early years. Today in 2025 looking forward, Interface has added technology capabilities, specialized personnel and partners to keep current in this marketplace.

What remains a constant is that using the accumulated knowledge of Interface and its partners to assist its clients in accessing and successfully securing government contracts is the common goal………….both then and now.
